Windwalker Monk
About the author
This guide is written by Maximize, an Officer and tank in Limit. Maximize, Formerly Maxibabe, has been raiding on his Monk alongside his Druid since Mists of Pandaria launched, and started playing the game in 2009.
Spec Overview
Windwalker Monk is an extremely versatile spec currently. They have a niche that makes them superior for certain situations such as cleaving 2-3 targets with Storm, Earth, and Fire or cleaving an important target far across the room alongside your target in which no other class can damage as effectively. They still remain strong in single target and AoE situations, and excel in doing odd jobs for the raid that other classes have trouble with. For example, they are able to immune multiple mechanics with Diffuse Magic/Zen Meditation.

Serenity Rotation
This is the basic rotation. In the Advanced section I will breakdown how to greatly improve your numbers from doing the basic rotation.
1) Any time there are 1-2 other targets than the boss you’re attacking that need to be damaged use Storm, Earth, and Fire on them.
2) Tiger Palm to maintain the Tiger Power buff. Do not refresh it early so you can get a proc for a free one.
3) Rising Sun Kick on cd at all times. It gives the target a debuff that lets your special abilitys do 20% more damage.
4) Fists of Fury when it is off cooldown and you have Tiger Power and RSK Debuff up.
5) Blackout Kick as your Chi Spender when Fists of Fury and Rising Sun Kick are on cooldown.
6) Zen Sphere as filler when you are energy starved.
7) Invoke Xuen, the White Tiger should always be used off cooldown unless needed for a DPS intensive phase. Pets scale dynamically now so there isn’t a need to snapshot stats. Contrary to popular belief it does NOT scale with tigereye brew but does scale with any haste/crit procs.
8) Tigereye Brew when you’re going to use Fists of Fury, you have trinket procs/Tiger Strikes, for important parts of the fight.
9) Chi Brew to give yourself Tigereye Brew charges and 2 free chi.
10) Touch of Death on any target that is equal to your health or under 10%.
11) Touch of Karma when you will take 50% of your health as damage.
12) Serenity when you have at least 3 chi and are low on energy (outside of the opener).
13) Energizing Brew as a energy regeneration cooldown when you are dry on energy.
Priority List
Go into the encounter with 3 out of the 4 chi needed to proc a Tigereye Brew charge, this can be done on trash.
1) Touch of Death
2) Storm, Earth, and Fire on 1-2 other targets
3) Tiger Palm buff
4) Rising Sun Kick Debuff
5) Fists of Fury
6) Rising Sun Kick
7) Blackout Kick + Jab if you’re going to energy Cap
8) Zen Sphere in dead time, try to keep two of these up using the zen sphere macro in the macros section.
9) Blackout Kick
Opener
There are multiple versions of this opener. You can reduce your time energy capped during later uses of Serenity by planning before hand, however you will cap for an extended amount of time in your opener.
1. Go in with 5 chi by using Expel Harm
2. Have Zen Sphere rolling on you and someone else so that it explodes 3-4 seconds in.
3. Pop Invoke Xuen, the White Tiger as you’re running in
4. Tiger Palm
5. Rising Sun Kick
6. Chi Brew + Blackout Kick
7. Chi Brew + Blackout Kick
8. Jab + Tigereye Brew with whatever number of stacks you have
9. Fists of Fury
10. Jab + Serenity with what should be 3 chi and spam Blackout Kick and Rising Sun Kick
11. When Serenity falls off and you are energy starved use Energizing Brew
12. Follow Priority
Chi Explosion 1-3 Target Rotation
This cleave build uses Chi Explosion instead of Serenity, Chi Burst instead of Zen Sphere, and Ascension instead of Chi Brew. This build should feel like you are going through a burn and recharge phases with Tigereye Brew, See more about this in the Advanced section.
1) Any time there are 1-2 other targets than the boss you’re dpsing that need to be damaged use Storm, Earth, and Fire on them.
2) Tiger Palm to maintain the Tiger Power buff. Do not refresh it early so you can get a proc for a free one (this is even more important when using Chi Explosion).
3) Use Rising Sun Kick to apply the debuff when there is more than 1 target in range. Do NOT use it on cooldown while AoEing. If there is only one mob it is then again worth it to use it on cooldown
4) Fists of Fury is your best cleave ability, use this on cooldown with Tigereye Brew if possible. Side Note: There is important info on this in the Advanced section about Storm, Earth, and Fire.
5) Chi Explosion Replaces Blackout Kick as your main chi spender with cleave build. With more than one target you should always use this at 4 chi. When those targets die and one target remain use Chi Explosion at these chi levels as a priority 3>4>2>1 I find myself never using it at 2 or 1.
6) Invoke Xuen, the White Tiger should always be used off cooldown unless needed for a DPS intensive phase. Pets scale dynamically now so there isn’t a need to snapshot stats. Contrary to popular belief it does NOT scale with Tigereye Brew but does scale with any haste/crit procs.
7) Chi Burst has a high priority with a lot of adds or as filler with few targets. Aim it at multiple enemies and pretend that your Storm, Earth, and Fire care which way you want them to aim it.
8) Touch of Death on any target that is equal to your health or under 10%.
9) Touch of Karma when you will take 50% of your health as damage, or a hard part of the fight
10) Energizing Brew is your energy regeneration cooldown, use this when you’re energy starved.
Priority List
Chi Explosion Cleave (1-3)
1) Touch of Death
2) Storm, Earth, and Fire
3) Tiger Palm buff
4) Rising Sun Kick Debuff
5) Fists of Fury
6) Chi Explosion (4)
7) Chi Burst when there are multiple adds stacked up, or as filler
Chi explosion with one target remaining
1) Touch of Death
2) Tiger Palm buff
3) Rising Sun Kick Debuff
4) Fists of Fury
5) Rising Sun Kick
6) Chi Explosion (3)
7) Chi Explosion (4)
Openers
I used to do a quicker opener with ascension that used Tigereye Brew earlier but it is not worth it, it is better to Jab twice more and get more Tigereye Brew if you still get your Fists of Fury off in your 10 seconds trinket procs. After using Chi Brew, yes, Ascension openers make you sad but it is worth it later on!
1. Go in with 6 Chi
2. Invoke Xuen, the White Tiger when you’re running in
3. Tiger Palm
4. Rising Sun Kick
5. Jab + Chi Explosion
6. Jab + (Arcane Torrent) + Chi Explosion If you are not a Blood Elf, replace Arcane Torrent with a Jab
7. Jab + Jab + Pop Tigereye Brew with whatever number of stacks you have
8. Fists of Fury
9. Energizing Brew
10. Follow Priority
AoE (5 targets)
Chi torpedo instead of Xuen for sustained or burst aoe
1. Storm, Earth, and Fire clones on 2 targets
2. Maintain Tiger Power
3. Rising Sun Kick debuff on all targets
4. Spinning Crane Kick until you get energy starved
5. Fists of Fury as filler. If targets are moving replace step 5 with step 6
6. Chi Explosion as filler at 4 chi
7. Chi Torpedo as a filler. You can use this higher in the priority at the beginning of the pull with cd’s up as it hits harder than Spinning crane kick.
Key Abilities
Tiger Strikes
A passive you have that can give you a huge damage boost, make sure to have this tracked as it is as good as your trinkets (gives about as much multistrike as a mythic butcher trinket proc).
Fortifying Brew
A decent cooldown for Windwalker. it does not have the stagger component like BM has so for us it is a slightly better barkskin with triple the cooldown but has some extra uses of giving you health and buffing your touch of karma/touch of death.
Touch of Karma
An awesome ability to have in progression. It does half the damage of Touch of Death but also gives you an absorb for half of your health. On a new fight use this defensively instead of offensively until you are used to the encounter.
Touch of Death
One of the best changes from MoP to WoD for windwalker. They made ToD awful to extremely good. It is by far your best use of 3 chi, so use it on anything you can that is relevant to the encounter before the boss gets below 10%.
Expel Harm
Instead of Jab when your health is <80% and it will do more damage than jab and heal you, however it will not proc Combo Breaker.
Transcendence
An ability where you can teleport to a predetermined location, similar to a warlock teleport simply put it down with place and use teleport to go to that spot. It is a great tool for raiding as it does not adhere to line of sight. I will expand on this tool a lot in the playstyle section.
Flying Serpent Kick
Can be used single target or AoE in absolute downtime and be an increase. It gets its greatest use out of pure movement from one place to another. It is the fastest spell in the game, and doing things like FSK out and transcendence back to where you were makes it very useful in raiding.
Storm, Earth, and Fire
A monks niche, it is what makes them the best at what they do, and is also great ability design by Blizzard. I will expand in the playstyle section of when this is worth it and why it is so good.
Nimble Brew
A nice move to have to get you out of a stun in a pinch, functions as a PVP trinket
Zen Meditation
Very useful ability used for immuning mechincs or simply in a pinch to not die. If you do not plan to use this for a specific part of the encounter, use it early and often on progression for harmful mechanics.
Advanced
This section to broaden on rotation and priority. Expanding and showing you every tool and trick to get the most damage out of your windwalker.
Tigereye Brew
Tigereye Brew is the most important ability that Windwalkers have when it comes to dealing damage. It is the biggest factor for dps difference in monks with similar gear. When you have such a flexible cooldown it is easy to misinterpret it and use it wrong.
A common way to use TeB is to use it every time your Fists of Fury comes off cooldown, even if it is under 10 stacks, this is a good guideline but is not entirely correct. Another common philosophy is to save TeB only for trinket procs/Tiger Strikes and hold FoF until then. Both of these are slightly wrong, you want to meet somewhere in the middle:
• Under normal RNG you will have 10 stacks of TeB up for every FoF. That being said, if you have awful RNG and you have less, DON’T hold TeB. Use it with however many stacks you have when you decide to use it.
• You should not be afraid of using TeB with less than ten stacks. It does nothing different per stack other than cap its maximum damage gain and light up at 10 stacks.
• That being said using TeB and immediately using FoF every 23ish seconds is not correct, but holding it for 2-4 seconds longer to see if you get Tiger Strikes or a proc, granted you don’t already have either of them.
• If you have Tiger Strikes up and/or a trinket proc when FoF is off cooldown you should use TeB immediatly and start spamming and use energizing brew/serenity with it
• If you do not have procs, pool for 2-4 seconds and see what you get. Immediately after using what you have for TeB + FoF and then spamming.
• General windwalker guideline is spam inside of TeB and Pool outside of it. In the next section i will talk about pooling. What it means, why and when you do it.
All in all, Your TeB usage should feel like a burn and recharge phase. Generally speaking when you’re saving TeB for your next fists of fury you should stay near high chi, and high energy without capping either which is the recharge phase. Then the burn phase of unloading all that chi with trinkets/Tiger Strikes/FoF and using as many abilities within that window as possible.
Energy/Chi Pooling
Pooling is a concept for all energy classes where you hold resources, either energy or chi(for monk), and save them until you have to use them. Energy classes are not like most dps classes, you have dead GCDs which means you don’t have to spam every GCD and stay around 20 energy and 0-2 chi. When I dont have Tigereye Brew up I am constantly between 50-80 energy and 3-5 chi until it is time to pop TeB and start spamming.
There are multiple reasons for this, the main being that when you pop your cooldown you have as much energy/chi as possible to use during that cd. Another reason is that during dead gcds there is no real reason to spam except bad habit from other classes. Master pooling and your damage will increase significantly.
Storm, Earth, and Fire
SEF is now almost always worth casting even if a mob is going to be alive for a single ability, where previously you needed them to be up for longer. A change from MoP to WoD was them taking the 10 energy cost AND the GCD off of Storm, Earth, and Fire making them free to cast, you don’t even have to detarget your boss with the right macros. Be smart about this, it’s not better to clone a target that is not important where you would be padding. On the other hand there are so many good cleave fights for monks in T17, it is worth it in almost every situation.
Combo Breaker
This passive has a chance to proc Tiger Palm or Blackout Kick from Jab. Now that we don’t have 2 piece T16 anymore, you should not use this right away unless you are going to energy cap. You can hold them as a set of free 1-2 chi or use them with the normal pooling mentality. Don’t spam them because it lit up.
Transcendence
This ability is probably my favorite found thing about maining windwalker. I played my monk as an alt in t14-16 and never progressed with it. After maining it for this tier, I have found that you can just abuse transcendance, you can always have one down during downtime, or in an important place you need to port to. If you find yourself at a point in the fight where you dont have a transcendance down or know where it is you could be doing better.
Chi Brew
Doesn’t need too much talking done about it. The best way to use this outside of the opener is to not use it outside of TeB unless you need to use it to get to 10. Both are viable options, but best case scenario you would want to use it to get an extra 2 chi in your cooldowns.
Talents Cheat Sheet
Level 15: Mainly for personal preference except Celerity when using Chi Torpedo. Tiger’s Lust is the go-to choice however Momentum is just as viable.
Level 30: Zen Sphere for single target patchwerk encounters. Chi Wave is more realistic to use on fights where optimizing zen sphere is difficult. Chi Burst for AoE encounters.
Level 45: Ascension while using Chi Explosion on fights longer than 4 minutes. Chi Brew for single target or short cleave encounters.
Level 60: Leg Sweep has the most utility for being the best stun in the game. The other talents don’t have as much use in PvE.
Level 75: Healing Elixirs for Steady healing when a fight has little to 0 big hits or strong magic damage Dampen Harm for encounters with 1 or multiple big hits in a row. Diffuse Magic for immuning mechanics and surviving any magic damage.
Level 90: Rushing Jade Wind is used very rarely now only in very long drawn out cleave fights(none yet in WoD). Invoke Xuen, the White Tiger for most to all cleave fights and single target Chi Torpedo for big AoE fights or burst AoE needs.
Level 100: Chi Explosion when there are targets that are going to be up for a significant amount of time. Serenity for all single target encounters, or encounters that require burst damage.
Advanced Talents
Level 15: Celerity, Tiger’s Lust, Momentum
All three of these talents are personal preference and all are viable for anything unless you are playing Chi Torpedo where Celerity is required.
Celerity is nice for having multiple sharp movements or a fight that requires moving out of fast mechanics often.
Tiger’s Lust is the usual go-to for most monks as you don’t normally need to roll more than twice in 20 seconds and it is one of the best speed increases in the game, only downside is that it is on the GCD.
Momentum was a lot more popular before WoD because it was one of the few speed increases in the game that actually worked with nitro boosts after they nerfed tiger’s lust and dash. However, nowadays this talent is the least used but definitely still viable.
Level 30: Chi Wave, Zen Sphere, Chi Burst
Chi Wave was the go to for single target for a long time, since monks came out actually. However the Zen Sphere buff made the talent pull slightly ahead of Chi Wave in a pure patchwerk fight. Side note: CW pulls crowd controlled targets even if you never target them, slightly annoying.
Zen Sphere is the best talent for single target as of recent. You should never refresh this before it explodes, that is a massive dps/hps loss. Try to time this so the explosion is on the pull and also when adds are out.
Chi Burst is the clear best choice for AoE/cleave. It is the best talent in this tier for what it does, while the other two are filler for single target, chi burst is something you want to get off higher in priority for AoE. Side note: your clones do not and never have cared about which way they aim it, be careful not to hit something you shouldn’t.
Level 45: Power Strikes, Ascension, Chi Brew
Power Strikes while giving you the most raw chi out of any talent, it is too far behind dps wise to be considered for ww right now. You get more chi through energy with ascension and chi brew gives you burst Tigereye Brew.
Ascension is only worth it right now for cleave/AoE Chi Explosion builds. It is definitely the best talent for fights that are 4+ minutes in length because of the energy regen without serenity, the extra chi is a nice perk as well for pooling for burst.
Chi Brew is now massively used after the buff to it giving you two stacks of Tigereye Brew when you use it, which both can proc off of mastery, giving you the possibility of 8 Tigereye brew stacks on the opener (The Dream) and making this the best talent for short cleave fights or single target.
Level 60: Ring Of Peace, Charging Ox Wave, Leg Sweep
Ring of Peace was much better before they took out the silence, now this would only be used in extremely niche situations where you would want to specifically incap a target. That situation is very rare, because when you can incap something 99% of the time you can stun it, making either of the other two talents a way better choice.
Charging Ox Wave is a cheap version of Leg Sweep, only used when you have to kite, stun from range, or have a stun every 30 seconds instead of 45 and you are the only one who can cover it.
Leg Sweep is widely regarded as the best stun in the game, the absolute go to on this tier.
Level 75: Healing Elixirs, Dampen Harm, Diffuse Magic
Very very good tier of abilities they all have very good uses with 2 of them being some of the best PvE cooldowns in the game.
Healing Elixirs is the least used talent here but can be used if you want a passive talent for whatever reason or want steady healing, other than that the other two options for WW are much better.
Dampen Harm is the best personal cooldown for a monk if used properly, you can effectively reduce the damage from 3 <15% damaging abilities to you by HALF. As a WW this doesn’t get taken off by melees like it does for brewmaster and works on harmful raid mechanics much more effectively.
While Dampen Harm is the better overall talent for raiding, Diffuse Magic is just behind in usefulness and some would argue more. On some fights diffuse can make windwalkers do things that other melee just cannot and it is on a 1 and a 1/2 minute cooldown, which is just unreal. I will mention uses for this in the fights section for blackrock foundry. Side note: there is a small problem with diffuse in that you can hit it and the first .1-.5 seconds of it it will not give you the 90% and getting rid of magic debuffs always happens BEFORE the reduction I.E. sha of pride trash. However you may never experience this unless you get hit by something and pop it last second and you you think you had it up but you just hit it too late.
Level 90: Rushing Jade Wind, Invoke Xuen, The White Tiger, Chi Torpedo
Rushing Jade Wind – This talent used to be the BOMB for cleave in MoP. it was worth it in every situation with more than one target. However in WoD they gave SCK a perk that let it do the same damage in half the time making it very very good and having literally double the burst. Unfortunately they did not implement this into rushing jade wind making it not good in any situation unless you are cleaving targets for minutes at a time with no downtime.
Invoke Xuen, the White Tiger is clearly the best single target but the best cleave talent as well.Make sure you turn Xuen’s taunt off!
Chi Torpedo after the 6.1 buff makes this the best pure/burst AoE talent for this tier. Make sure to take away your Storm, Earth, and Fire clones as they reduce its damage because they cannot perform the move. Very useful tip: jump before you roll, you will go a quarter of the distance when using it to dps.
Level 100: Hurricane Strike, Chi Explosion, Serenity
Hurricane Strike is not currently used in any situation. I would like this to be good as it would be a good fit for a single target talent instead of serenity but they need to rework/buff the damage.
Chi Explosion is probably my favorite change of WoD, it gives monks great versatility for their talent and it lets one talent use anything from 1-4 chi and it adds something every addition. In my opinion it is one of the most creative talents they have put in this game, it does something relevant and interesting for all 3 specs of monk.
Serenity is used for single target currently but could be out-scaled by Chi Explosion in the future. I wish they would change this ability and make it a little more interesting. Haste capping in this form makes me cringe and I wish you could store the energy in your altered state, or have a flat damage increase on it.
Glyphs
Major
Glyph of Touch of Karma
The range is nice for using this in a clutch moment where you may not be in melee range.
Glyph of Zen Meditation
Good for moving around when you need to soak something, or get out of a mechanic. Never replace.
Glyph of the Floating Butterfly
Best glyph addition in WoD, allowing you to move doesn’t get you stuck standing still casting Fists of Fury and the boss moves away.
Situational
Glyph of Fists of Fury
When you need to 100% parry a mechanic
Glyph of Touch of Death
On single target fights where you only get one use(replace ToK Glyph)
Glyph of Transcendence
When you need to transcend exactly every 20 seconds.
Glyph of Expel Harm
When you are going to be below 30% for long periods of time for whatever reason(Chimaeron)
Glyph of Fortuitous Spheres
For burst healing when you’re low.
Single Target Stats
Agility>Multi>Crit>Versatility>Haste>Mastery
Agility is a primary stat that provides 1 Attack Power (AP) per point. A majority of our abilities use a percentage of attack power to the damage they deal.
Mastery: Brewing: Tigereye Brew When you generate Tigereye Brew charges, you have a 20% base chance to generate an additional charge.
Critical Strike increases the chance to critically hit with abilities.
Haste increases attack speed and energy regeneration rate.
Versatility increases all damage and healing done, and decreases all damage taken.
Multistrike causes abilities to have a chance to hit a second and a third time, each dealing 33.3% of the initial damage.
Enchants
Rings: Enchant Ring – Gift of Multistrike
Cloak: Enchant Cloak – Breath of Multistrike
Neck: Enchant Neck – Gift of Multistrike
Weapon: Enchant Weapon – Mark of Warsong It sims ~20 dps less on a pure single target encounter than Enchant Weapon – Mark of the Thunderlord and naturally is better in any cleave environment. Enchant Weapon – Mark of the Thunderlord is also viable.

Talents
Chi Wave, Chi Brew, Dampen Harm, Serenity
Glyphs
Glyph of Touch of Karma, Glyph of the Floating Butterfly, Glyph of Zen Meditation
Strategy
On the opener I get hit by the first Explosive Shard and use Touch of Karma for damage, then instantly Nimble Brew the stun. I would not recommend this if you are new on the fight, or on progression.
Use Touch of Death on boxes and try to find boxes in the back of the room that are high HP to Storm, Earth, and Fire
Make sure to use Spear Hand Strike to interrupt Blackrock Barrage
Have a Transcendence down in Rolling Fury phase to have a safe spot to port to if you want to be aggressive with boxes.
Hans’gar & Franzok
Talents
Chi Burst, Chi Brew / Ascension, Dampen Harm / Chi Explosion.
Use Ascension on longer pulls and Chi Brew for quick/speed kills.
Glyphs
Glyph of Touch of Death, Glyph of the Floating Butterfly, Glyph of Zen Meditation
Strategy
Have a Transcendence down in the corner in case you get stuck, but other than that enjoy roll and Flying Serpent Kick as you never get hit by anything.
Beastlord Darmac
Talents
Chi Burst, Chi Brew, Dampen Harm / Diffuse Magic, Serenity
Only play Chi Explosion if you are going to pad on spears/beasts. Serenity is the most effective for killing this boss.
Glyphs
Glyph of Touch of Karma, Glyph of the Floating Butterfly, Glyph of Zen Meditation
Strategy
Unless you want to completely pad on this fight you’re going to be near the bottom just Storm, Earth, and Fire spears and the boss when he splits.
Use Touch of Karma if you get hit by Rend and Tear.
Gruul
Talents
Zen Sphere, Chi Brew, Dampen Harm / Diffuse Magic, Serenity

Use Touch of Karma and Diffuse Magic as much as you can for soaking Inferno Slice.
You as a windwalker can also Provoke the boss for the Inferno Slice and also can solo slices.
Flamebender Ka’graz
Talents
Chi Burst, Chi Brew, Diffuse Magic, Serenity / Chi Explosion.
Playing Chi Explosion is an extreme where you would sacrifice overall damage to do more damage on the dogs(hardest part of fight), or pad on Aknor for long periods of time.
Glyphs
Glyph of Touch of Karma, Glyph of the Floating Butterfly, Glyph of Zen Meditation
Strategy
Remember to save Tigereye Brew for the dogs and Storm, Earth, and Fire them as they are the only important part of the fight.
Operator Thogar
Talents
Chi Burst, Chi Brew, Diffuse Magic, Serenity/Chi Explosion.
Using Chi Explosion is viable for man at arm’s cleave and padding on adds, however Serenity is more effective at killing the fight.

Monks are great for this fight, great boss damage and awesome cannon/man at arms damage. Make sure to Storm, Earth, and Fire both cannons.
Use Touch of Death on the Man at Arms.
Blast Furnace
Talents
Chi Burst, Ascension, Diffuse Magic, Chi Explosion
Glyphs

Blackhand
Talents
Zen Sphere, Chi Brew, Dampen Harm/Diffuse Magic, Serenity
Glyphs
Glyph of Touch of Karma, Glyph of the Floating Butterfly, Glyph of Zen Meditation
Strategy
Great class on mythic blackhand, one of the best melee for the fight if you use them right. They can solo one side upstairs if done properly, they have good siegemaker cleave if you need it. and they’re one of the only melee besides rogues that can survive taking smashes in p3.
How to solo balcony: Touch of Karma the first mob you see for survivability reasons get it to about 70% so it dies from it. Then put out your three clones putting yourself in the middle so when one dies you can put one on the second to last mob. Then finish off the second to last mob and Touch of Death the last one.
Addons
Addons are personal preference, you can use a lot of them, or simply default with a few mods. There are a few I feel are essential for raiding.
With this AddOn, you can do anything. Literally anything, provided you have some lua knowledge. If you don’t, well that’s not a problem! The options are pretty simple to follow and you can make notifiers for any buff/debuff imaginable. You can also customize it to warn you in different ways, such as through sounds, animations, text, etc. My Monk Weak auras can be found here.
